Breakfast in the morning.

You may thing that you are being clever with your calorie consumption by skipping breakfast; less calories eaten in a day means a lower body weight – well not exactly.

This may sound logical but the body does not work exactly like that.
The most up to date scientific research shows that people who eat breakfast in the morning:

  • Have a lower BMI (body mass index – your body fat ratio)
  • Breakfast jumpstarts your metabolism and so you burn more calories throughout the day.
  • Consume less fat through the day
  • Meet recommendations for fruit and vegetable consumption
  • Have higher daily calcium intake
  • Have higher daily fibre intake
  • Have better performance for memory and attention in work or in school.

When you think about it this does make sense. You can’t think when you’re hungry and you are less likely to make healthy snack choices too. Eating a breakfast containing fruit and fibre and some protein like eggs will stop those mid-morning hunger pangs so you are more likely to accept a piece of fruit as a snack and refuse the biscuits or chocolate.

What happens when you skip breakfast. Well, when you skip breakfast the message your body gets is that it needs to conserve rather than burn any incoming calories so these calories are stored as fat.
Studies have shown that if you miss or skip breakfast

  • You are more likely to be overweight
  • Less likely to meet recommendations for fruit and vegetable consumption
  • More likely to consume unhealthy snacks

What should you eat for Breakfast:

Fibre and or protein will help to fill you up so try to eat porridge or a high fibre cereal which is low in sugar. Breakfast need never be boring, mix a different piece of fruit with your breakfast every day. Raisins in your porridge one day and blueberries the next, or Weetabix with banana. Poached eggs, scrambled eggs, French toast, pancakes with healthy toppings or fruit smoothies. There are endless healthy breakfast ideas on the internet, surprise yourself and try something new.
